Today I actually did get to the cafe to read the book after two days of otherwise chatting. Ian McEwan writes at all different lengths, this is a lengthy one. Somehow seeing images directly, immediately, has overtaken the idea of creating images in your head, the images you get from reading a story. Interestingly, the writer or any reader is not going to see the images the same, whereas when you see something on your phone it is the same for everybody, of course you can interpret it differently, but you get the picture.
